The Battle for Hobby Lobby

Some of you may not shop at Hobby Lobby due to one not being local or may not agree with the company's decisions they make. I may get slammed for this post but feel I must add my thought on the matter. We are a Nation built on Christian values. Our money is printed with "In God We Trust". I try to live my life by the principles God has put in place for us. I do not slam people for their beliefs just because they are not my own. I am a Christian and I am not afraid to say so. I find it appalling that a business can be fined for following their religious beliefs. Now this business is not sacrificing living things or doing things that would hurt anyone they just are choosing to follow God and not offer abortion causing drugs to their employees. They are not telling the employees that they can not seek these out them selves they are just standing by their beliefs and telling them they will not pay for them. I completely agree with their decision on this matter. They will not aid in the death of a child. Someone has to stand up for the voices of the babies that can not defend their right to live and grow. I for one do NOT believe in abortion in no way shape or form. I believe a baby is a gift from God. It was a struggle for me to get my daughter and I suffered many losses during my journey to conceive. I praise God every day for my kids and as long as I can breath I will continue to do so. With that being said here is a letter from the Hobby Lobby founder and CEO of the company on this matter:

Letter by David Green, the founder and CEO of Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc.:
“When my family and I started our company 40 years ago, we were working out of a garage on a $600 bank loan, assembling miniature picture frames. Our first retail store wasn't much bigger than most people's living rooms, but we had faith that we would succeed if we lived and worked according to God's word. From there, Hobby Lobby has become one of the nation's largest arts and crafts retailers, with more than 500 locations in 41 states. Our children grew up into fine business leaders, and today we run Hobby Lobby together, as a family.
We're Christians, and we run our business on Christian principles. I've always said that the first two goals of our business are: (1) to run our business in harmony with God's laws, and (2) to focus on people more than money. And that's what we've tried to do. We close early so our employees can see their families at night. We keep our stores closed on Sundays, one of the week's biggest shopping days, so that our workers and their families can enjoy a day of rest. We believe that it is by God's grace that Hobby Lobby has endured, and he has blessed us and our employees. We've not only added jobs in a weak economy, we've raised wages for the past four years in a row.
Our full-time employees start at 80% above minimum wage. But now, our government threatens to change all of that. A new government healthcare mandate says that our family business MUST provide what I believe are abortion-causing drugs as part of our health insurance. Being Christians, we don't pay for drugs that might cause abortions, which means that we don't cover emergency contraception, the morning-after pill or the week-after pill. We believe doing so might end a life after the moment of conception, something that is contrary to our most important beliefs. It goes against the Biblical principles on which we have run this company since day one.
If we refuse to comply, we could face $1.3 million PER DAY in government fines. Our government threatens to fine job creators in a bad economy. Our government threatens to fine a company that's raised wages four years running. Our government threatens to fine a family for running its business according to its beliefs. It's not right. I know people will say we ought to follow the rules; that it's the same for everybody.
But that's not true. The government has exempted thousands of companies from this mandate, for reasons of convenience or cost. But it won't exempt them for reasons of religious belief. So, Hobby Lobby and my family are forced to make a choice. With great reluctance, we filed a lawsuit today, represented by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, asking a federal court to stop this mandate before it hurts our business. We don't like to go running into court, but we no longer have a choice. We believe people are more important than the bottom line and that honoring God is more important than turning a profit.
My family has lived the American dream. We want to continue growing our company and providing great jobs for thousands of employees, but the government is going to make that much more difficult. The government is forcing us to choose between following our faith and following the law. I say that's a choice no American and no American business should have to make.
The last two paragraphs of this original article was added to the speech in the e-mail and has been deleted. This was a speech made by Mr. Green and was reported in USA Today.
David Green
CEO and Founder of Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc.

This letter was found here: and you can go here to read the article on the matter.

I am supporting the decision this company has made and I hope more Americans will as well. I feel even if you are not a Christian you know what it is like to be persecuted for your beliefs what ever they may be. This Nation is in a great deal of trouble by the way it is being run and the people that are in office. Our National debt is at an all time HIGH but the man in office is jet setting all over the world for his own gain and not the gain of the country. With unemployment at an all time high and more people on Welfare than ever the last thing we need is to lose another big or small company to government greed. The closing of Hobby Lobby would put a LOT of Americans out of work. Much needed jobs. I stand with Hobby Lobby. Will you stand with them as well?

Have a blessed day everyone!! Until next time :)

Beauty Beyond the Stickers

Today I thought about what I wanted to share with you and I decided it was time to share some of my world with you. As y'all know I live in Tucson, AZ and it is really beautiful even with all the stickers. Yes I live in the desert and it gets down right HOT here. But there is still beauty every were you look.

Here you will see a cholla cacti. This can be a really mean plant. As you can see all the stickers this plant has. The cholla (pronounced choy-a) is one of the most feared and hated cacti in the southwest desert. If you have ever brushed up against one, you will know why. The cholla has pads that separate easily from the main stem. The spines will easily attach to your clothing, your skin, your shoes and more. Since the plant is covered with spines as you can see above, it's difficult to grab and dislodge or remove the pad that has found a new home with you. Do you ask "Why are they so difficult to remove?" Unlike other varieties of cacti with solid spines, cholla's actually have hollow spines. Yep that is right hollow spines. Because they are hollow they can easily attach to whatever they touch with their needle like sharpness and take it from me they are really sharp. If there is moisture, such as with skin, the tips actually curve once they have made contact, locking their spines in place just underneath the skins top layer or even deeper. OUCH! Yes the end of the spines curl and form a hook on the end.  There are several types of Jumping Cholla cacti in the desert southwest, but all of them were called the "jumping" cacti in past days because they seemed to jump when a boot or shoe would walk on or near them. I bet you are asking yourself this very question:  How could a plant so nasty be so beautiful? Good question, and one more mystery of the desert. The plant (especially the Teddy Bear Cholla with its golden spines) is quite beautiful at sunrise and sunset. As the sun catches the tips of the spines, the plants radiate a cast of yellow, and look quite soft sometimes with an appearance of velvet. Add to this the pink flower it produces and the plant is delightful to look at only just do not touch. Because some of the Jumping Cholla cacti can grow to heights of 8 feet tall, they look like strange, distorted trees, each with its own personality. Believe it or not, the cactus wren builds nests on the Jumping Cholla. The nests are quite secure among all the spines and the bird knows how to avoid the spines of the Jumping Cholla. This plant propagates and spreads throughout the desert by its own defense mechanisms: Its spines attach to anything that can carry it around, animals, people, the wind. When a Jumping Cholla finds a new home, with a little time, and contact with the soil, it begins to root and grow.

We have some amazing trees that are in full bloom right now. As you can see this tree is alive with little yellow flowers. A truly amazing site to behold. I love trees. Yes even the trees out here have stickers. I know crazy right?

Prickly pears also called paddle cactus typically grow with flat, rounded cladodes (also called platyclades) that are armed with two kinds of spines; large, smooth, fixed spines and small, hairlike prickles called glochids, that easily penetrate skin and detach from the plant. Many types of prickly pears grow into dense, tangled structures. The second photo above is a prickly pear that has been treated by a landscaper and the stickers have been removed. The fruit of prickly pears, commonly called cactus fruit, cactus fig, Indian fig or tuna in Spanish, is edible, although it has to be peeled carefully to remove the small spines on the outer skin before consumption. If the outer layer is not properly removed, glochids can be ingested, causing discomfort of the throat, lips, and tongue, as the small spines are easily lodged in the skin. Native Americans, like the Tequesta, would roll the fruit around in a suitable medium (grit) to "sand" off the glochids. Alternatively, rotating the fruit in the flame of a campfire or torch has been used to remove the glochids. Cactus figs are often used to make candies, jelly, or drinks such as vodka or lemonade. The prickly pear fruit is also used as the main ingredient of a popular Christmas beverage in the British Virgin Islands, called "Miss Blyden".

This is one of the mountains just outside and across from my house. There is a spot in the mountain that has been carved out and there is an alter in the side of the mountain. People walk the trail up the side of the mountain to pay thanks to God and to pray for their needs. They light candles and everything.

The Barrel cactus can be easily distinguished from other cacti because of it cylinder-shaped body. The cactus usually reaches from around five to eleven feet tall, and at that height it is one of the largest cacti in the North American deserts. This cactus is really a man-sized (or bigger) cylinder with numerous parallel ridges that run down the sides. These ridges are topped with dangerously sharp 3-4 inch spines. The barrel cactus is also a flowering cactus. It has rings of yellow-green or red blossoms at its top. As you can see in the picture above the yellow buds. Those yellow buds are were the flowers form.  Like many plants of the world, this cactus has numerous uses. Native Americans who lived in the desert found the barrel cactus very useful. In the vast untamed desert land and scorching heat, you couldn't just hop in your air-conditioned car and cruise down to the local supermarket. There was no such thing as a supermarket. The Native Americans had to look hard to find food. The barrel cactus provided some very important provisions for them. They stewed the Barrel Cactus to make a cabbage-like food. They got water to drink from the pulp and they made fish hooks from the spines, which are pointed at the end. The pulp is also made into "cactus candy". The Barrel cactus is found in the Mojave, Sonora, and the Chihuahua deserts.

There is tons of open area and trails to walk. The picture shown above is one such trail just across the street from my house. This trail leads up to the mountain in the picture above as well.

As you can see in the photo above the land is very rough and makes for quite a hike. Even tho the land is rocky and the hike is a good workout it is a beautiful walk.

Thank you Catherine I could not for the life of me think of the name of this flowering plant. You are 100% correct the name is desert bird of paradise and in the picture above it is the Red Bird of Paradise. A short, arid-climate shrub with amazing flowers! Akin to some of its paradise flower relatives, this tough plant is a profuse bloomer and something to behold. Mainly used as an ornamental, particularly in dry regions. The plant was once used medicinally in parts of South America. The seeds and seed pods are toxic. You do not want your kids or animals snacking on this plant. I know you are asking does this plant have stickers too. The answer to that question is yes it does. LOL I always tease and tell people that everything that grows here has stickers.

The saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) is one of the defining plants of the Sonoran Desert. These plants are large, tree-like columnar cacti that develop branches (or arms) as they age, although some never grow arms. These arms generally bend upward and can number over 25. Saguaros are covered with protective spines, white flowers in the late spring, and red fruit in summer. Saguaros are found exclusively in the Sonoran Desert. The most important factors for growth are water and temperature. If the elevation is too high, the cold weather and frost can kill the saguaro. Although the the Sonoran Desert experiences both winter and summer rains, it is thought that the Saguaro obtains most of its moisture during the summer rainy season. The saguaro is not currently listed as threatened or endangered. Arizona has strict regulations about the harvesting, collection or destruction of this species. If there is one plant in Arizona that you can get in trouble over it is the Saguaro. They are protected by law. The Saguaro is home to our State bird the Cactus Wren. A bird of arid regions, the cactus wren is often found around yucca, mesquite or saguaro. Cactus wrens nest in cactus plants; sometimes in a hole in a saguaro, or a spot where prickly cactus spines provide protection for the nest. Male and female cactus wrens mate for life and are similar in appearance. They protect their established territory (where they live throughout the year) and aggressively defend their nests from predators. Cactus wrens also destroy the nests of other bird species, pecking or removing their eggs.

Any time you go hiking, fishing, hunting, camping and any outdoor activities you need to be prepared for anything that may come your way. That is why I am now offering survival bracelets on my web site. I want to share some of them with you today.  :)

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I know it was a long one, but I had a lot to catch up on after taking a week off for family. If you really want to make my day leave me a comment and tell me what you think of this post. Thank you again for stopping by.

Spring in Tucson Arizona

It is Spring here in sunny Tucson, AZ. It got up to 96 degrees the other day. Hot Hot Hot!! Everything is blooming and the desert is starting to come alive! Watch out for those rattle snakes they are out and about right now!

Rattle Snake that my Hubby came across the other day!

It really is beautiful in Arizona during spring. The cactus flowers are blooming and the sky is lovely!

There are many trails to walk and nature is so very calming. Take the time to stop and smell the roses this Spring!!

Here at AZ Desert Creations I have been working on many new Tree of Life items. I have added a brooch to the list of wonderful trees to choose from on my web site that I wanted to share with you today.

Green and Blue Aventurine Tree of Life Brooch Wire Wrapped World Tree

The Tree of Life is also known as the World Tree. I have for you a Tree of Life Brooch. It is made with light green and blue aventurine semi precious gemstone chips for the leaves. The pendant is wire wrapped using 16 gauge copper wire for the circle frame. The tree is wire wrapped using pure copper wire. Once I hand formed the frame I then hammered the frame for strength. I hand wrapped the tree limbs adding the light green and blue aventurine semi precious gemstone chips for the tree leaves. I then wire wrapped the tree limbs and formed the tree trunk. From there I wire wrapped the tree roots all by hand. I then added the brooch closure to the back of the Tree of Life wire wrapping it securely in place with copper wire. This brooch is very special and has a ton of flair. All of my Tree of Life items have a 3D effect. Meaning they are not flat. They have a dome shape. All of my Tree of Life items are very unique and one of a kind (OOAK). This brooch will make a fantastic gift for that special person in your life. Introductory Priced at only $30.00 + Shipping!!

Cloth Diaper Safe Homemade Laundry Detergent

If you have been following my blog or YouTube you know that I am cloth diapering my baby girl. Cloth diaper detergent is expensive. Having to spend that extra money does not help when cloth diapering to save money. I started looking for recipes for homemade laundry soap that was cloth diaper safe. I also wanted to find a detergent for our family clothing to save money as well. This is what I found and it works great. I hope everyone enjoys this inexpensive and easy to make laundry soap.

If you have an HE washer not to worry this is safe for HE washers. :)
Both produce low suds as required for the HE brands.
Make sure to use the right amount. :)

Cloth Diaper Homemade Laundry Detergent Recipe:
(Powdered, only takes about 3 minutes to make)
If you want a fragrance all you do is add two drops of your choice of essential oil to the water before adding your diapers.

2 cups of Borax
2 cups of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (not baking soda!)
2 cups of Oxygen cleaning powder, such as Oxyclean (I get my Oxyclean from Wal-Mart)

Mix it up well so there are no lumps. Use 1 Tablespoon (15 ml) for small loads & 2 Tablespoons (30 ml) for large loads.
Store your detergent in a recycled, air tight container. I use a candy joy from the dollar store and it works great. I made a label and taped it to the side on the container with Cloth Diaper Detergent on it with the recipe.

Everyday Laundry Soap Detergent Recipe for your Family Laundry
(takes about 10 to 15  minutes to make)
If you want an added fragrance you can add 2 drops of essential oil to water before adding your clothes.
1 bar finely grated Zote,  Castile or Fels-Naptha Soap (You can use Ivory but you will need 2 bars instead of 1. I have heard that Ivory is not good for your washer so I do not recommend using Ivory.)
1 cup of Borax
1 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
1/2 cup of Oxygen cleaner powder, such as Oxyclean

Mix all ingredients well. It will look like yellow (if you use Fels-Naptha) or pink (if you use the pink zote bar) & white granules. Use 1 tablespoon for light, small loads & 2 tablespoons for large loads.
Store in a recycled air tight container. I use a coffee can and I have labeled it with the recipe on the label. I also clearly state on the label that it is the family detergent.

If you have hard water you can add a water softener, Washing soda is a water softener. You can add 1/2 a cup more to the mix for hard water.

This has saved us so much money and it is fun and super easy to make. I hope you find this as wonderful as  I do.

Until Next Time!

Mine have a kind of dome shape that makes them super special and really come to life. Kumihimo Braiding

Kumihimo is a Japanese word. "Kumi" means to plait or gather together, "Himo" a string or cord. So "Kumihimo" means plaited or braided cords. Braiding has been part of almost every culture throughout the ages. The Japanese began braiding cord and silk for the Samurai warriors to lace and decorate their armor and scabbards. Kumihimo Braids are both durable and beautiful, and have patterns in them that are formed by varying the sequence of the thread movements while braiding, as well as by the initial color and number of threads used when setting up the Kumihimo Disk or Marudai.

This braiding technique is very time consuming and labor intensive. For some it is very mundane due to the repetition. I find this technique to be very fun and soothing. Like beading for me it is a way to take the mind away from the everyday troubles.

Kumihimo can be done with almost any kind of stringing material. I find working with different kinds of stringing material you can come up with some amazing cords that can not be found anywhere else. Take for instance my new addition to my web site.

Wire Wrapped Birds Nest Kumihimo Necklace and Dragonfly Bracelet Set

In this set I used dazzle twine in purple and blue. This twine has a glossy exterior that makes the light bounce off it creating a glimmer or dazzle. Who would have thought that dazzle twine could be used to make such a lovely necklace and bracelet. Well me for one. LOL I saw it and let out a little squeal, grabbed it up and proceeded to the checkout. My Hubby looked at me like I was crazy and said "What in the world are you going to do with that?" I said "I am going to kumihimo braid it into a necklace and bracelet!" He laughed at me and said "What ever!" After it was done he changed his tone and told me "WOW that came out nice!" I just smiled at him thinking "Told you so!" LOL

There is no limit to the creativity you can have. Like this next item I have on my web site.

Black and White Beaded Kumihimo with Blue Dyed Agate Pendant, Handmade

In this necklace I used cotton yarn and added seed beads for the focal section and then created sections of kumihimo cording in black for the remainder of the necklace. I used wooden beads for the connector covers for the necklace. In the beaded kumihimo section there are 400 seed beads. Yes you read that right 400 of them. This necklace is truly unique in every way. I always use a heavy duty glue for my cord end caps to ensure they are well secured.

I also wanted to share with you one last item today that I made using the beaded kumihimo in pink and green. It is listed on my web site as well.

Pink and Green Beaded Kumihimo Bracelet with Love Charm, Handmade

In this bracelet there are over 200 size 10/0 seed beads. I added a love charm to add that extra pop. Any of these items would make amazing Mother's Day gifts and every item on my web site is handmade by me. :)

The Tree of Life

The Tree of Life has so many meanings to so many people and faiths. It alludes to the interconnection of all life on our planet and serves as a metaphor for common descent in the evolutionary sense. The tree of knowledge (connecting to heaven and the underworld) and the tree of life (connecting all forms of creation) are both forms of the world tree or cosmic tree. This is according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. The World Tree is portrayed in various religions and philosophies as the same tree. The Tree of Life reminds us of unity and living in peace. The Tree of Life is an important symbol in nearly every culture. With its branches reaching into the sky, and roots deep in the earth, it dwells in three worlds, a link between heaven, the earth, and the underworld, uniting above and below. It is both a feminine symbol, bearing sustenance, and a masculine, visibly phallic symbol another union.

In Jewish and Christian mythology we know that the Tree of Life was a gift from God. Planted at the center of paradise (The Garden of Eden) it was the crowing glory. God had given this tree to Adam and Eve as a source of blessing and eternal life. In the winter when the tree loses its leaves this symbolizes death. When the tree sprouts new leaves (new growth) in the Spring this symbolizes resurrection. The tree also bears fruits or seeds, which contain the essence of the tree. This continuous regeneration is a potent symbol of immortality. It is the fruit of the tree that confers immortality in the Jewish creation story.

The Mayan believed heaven is a wonderful and magical place on Earth hidden by a mystical mountain called Tamoanchan. The Mayan tree of life is a cross with its center being the point of absolute beginning. The source of all creation. Its branches passing through each of the three layers of existence. The three layers being the underworld, the earth, and the sky.

The Tree of Life is really an amazing symbol recognized around the world.

A Cheap Option for making a Kumihimo Disk

I have a new video on YouTube on some options for making and getting a Kumihimo disk. Anyone who has been looking for a disk knows they cost between $8.00 and $15.00 online plus shipping. I do not know about you but I just can not afford this option. I did a bit of research and found a way to make a disk for under $3.00 and I found a disk that is almost exactly the same as the Kumihimo disk for under $2.00 at Wal-Mart. I explain everything in this little video. The template in the video is located here:
Kumihimo Template I do not use cardboard as she tells you to. What I did was I went to Michael's craft store and purchased a foam board and glued it to that and cut it out.

Once you have done a Kumihimo braid yourself you will see just how labor intensive this braid truly is and you will have a greater respect for handmade artists that make these wonderful bracelets and necklaces for sell. I have a wonderful bracelet on my ArtFire Shop for sell and it is a beaded Kumihimo.

Creating my Egyptian Coil Bracelet

I wanted to share the process I took to make my Egyptian coil bracelet. I made the bracelet out of copper wire. First I cut all the sections of wire to create the links. Then I filled the ends of all the cut wire so they were smooth. I then marked all the wire for the center points. It was time to start making the coil links.

Once that was done it was time to hammer all the spiral coils to make them strong.

Now it was time to connect all the links and bend them into position.

Now the bracelet is really starting to come together.

Really starting to look great. At this point I had to finish adding the links and make the hook clasp for the end. After 4 hours this wonderful bracelet is finished!!

This Egyptian Coil Bracelet is now listed ion my web site for $60.00 Pop over and check it out!

Until next time!!
